Tenugui Kakejiku : Hakubai-zu ー White Plum Blossoms

This elegant hanging scroll is a refined work of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Featuring the original “White Plum Blossoms” tenugui design by Asanoha, the artwork is mounted with the highest-grade Rakusai-donsu brocade, known for its luxurious texture and luster. The scroll ends are crafted from stately shitan (rosewood), and the piece is presented in a specially made kiri-bako (Paulownia wood box), ensuring its lasting beauty and preservation.

The design captures the quiet strength and grace of white plum blossoms, rendered with refined elegance and a subtle color gradient created through the chusen dyeing technique by a master artisan. The background glows with a brilliance reminiscent of gold, lending a luminous depth to the entire piece. This work belongs to a series based on original paintings by renowned Chinese artist Wang Chengxi—known worldwide as “The Painter of Plum Blossoms.”

Plum blossoms, along with pine and bamboo, are part of the “Three Friends of Winter” (saikan no sanyū), revered in East Asian culture for their symbolism of perseverance, purity, and resilience. Blooming in the late winter snow, the plum is celebrated as a joyful harbinger of spring, as well as a powerful symbol of good fortune, vitality, and protection against misfortune.

With its auspicious meaning and timeless beauty, this scroll makes a thoughtful and culturally significant gift for a wide range of occasions—such as weddings, housewarmings, store openings, or as a treasured Japanese souvenir.
