Nassen Tenugui : Kabuki Isho Dojoji Ⅱ (Kabuki Costume “Dojoji”)

This tenugui features the exquisite costume design of Shirabyōshi Hanako, the central character in the famous kabuki dance piece Musume Dōjōji. Her elegant outfit includes a kimono with a cherry blossom pattern, a black obi adorned with auspicious motifs, and a golden eboshi cap. The design is based on original artwork by dye artist Noriko Kageyama, and has been brought to life by skilled artisans using the nassen technique—a traditional Japanese method of surface dyeing. In nassen, colors are carefully hand-applied to the surface of the fabric using stencils. It is particularly suited to expressing fine and vivid patterns, making it ideal for capturing the ornate beauty of kabuki costumes.

Musume Dōjōji (The Maiden at Dōjōji Temple) is one of the most celebrated kabuki dances for onnagata (male actors playing female roles). Inspired by the Noh play Dōjōji, it presents a continuation of the tragic legend of Anchin and Kiyohime. During a bell consecration ceremony at Dōjōji Temple in Kii Province, a beautiful dancing maiden appears in the guise of a shirabyōshi. At the monks’ request, she dons a golden cap and begins a solemn Noh-style dance, which soon shifts into a series of dazzling kabuki performances. In a shocking twist, she leaps into the temple bell—and when it is raised, a serpent-like woman emerges from within.

The cherry blossom motif symbolizes prosperity and is cherished around the world as a representative flower of Japan. This tenugui, rich in cultural meaning and traditional symbolism, makes a wonderful decorative piece for the New Year, or a thoughtful gift for birthdays, baby celebrations, hatsuzekku (first seasonal festival), or other joyful occasions. As a traditional Japanese craft, it is also highly appreciated as a gift or souvenir for international guests.
