Small Furoshiki : Chōjū-giga Emaki (Green / Pink)

Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga is a series of pictorial scrolls believed to have been created in the late Heian period.Executed entirely in ink, the animals are arranged in a free and expressive composition that moves beyond realism and ornamentation, subtly reflecting the values and ideas of their time.

By depicting human activities through animals, the work presents an unconstrained perspective that reveals the foundations of Japanese aesthetic sensibility, and is often regarded as one of the origins of Japanese comic expression.

This small furoshiki translates the world of Chōjū-giga into a textile form.

Through the simple acts of wrapping, covering, and tying, the flow of the imagery and the sophistication of its composition can be experienced in a tactile way. Handling and using the cloth allows one to engage with the design much like unrolling a handscroll—an experience unique to furoshiki.

By both viewing and using it, the intellectual depth and formal beauty of Chōjū-giga can be appreciated within the context of everyday life.
