Nassen Tenugui : Yanone Ⅱ

This tenugui features a scene from the kabuki play “Yanone”, dyed by skilled artisans using the nassen technique. Nassen is a traditional Japanese surface dyeing method in which color is carefully hand-applied to the surface of the fabric using stencils. It is especially well-suited for producing fine, vivid designs. The artwork comes from an original series by kappazuri stencil print artist Hiromitsu Takahashi.

“Yanone” is part of the Soga-mono stories traditionally performed in Edo during the New Year. It depicts Gorō Tokimune, who sharpens an arrowhead to avenge his father’s death. In a dream, he learns that his brother Jūrō is in danger and rushes to help—riding a horse that had just delivered a daikon radish. With his bold aragoto costume—kurumabishi wig, sujiguma red face paint, a black satin robe with a butterfly crest, and a dramatic niō-dasuki sash—Gorō captures the heroic and vibrant style unique to kabuki.

This colorful kabuki tenugui is ideal for New Year’s decorations, or as a celebratory gift for occasions like birthdays, baby celebrations, or hatsuzekku (first seasonal festival). As a traditional Japanese craft, it also makes a meaningful and memorable souvenir for guests from abroad.
