江戸の町に生きた人々の暮らしやユーモアを、巧みに描いた浮世絵師・歌川国芳。彼の人気シリーズのひとつに、擬人化された猫たちが登場する作品群があります。その中でもひときわ目を引くのが、「流行猫の曲手まり」。

Small Furoshiki : Cats Performing Ball Tricks
Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a renowned ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, was known for his witty and imaginative depictions of daily life. Among his most beloved works are those featuring anthropomorphic cats—each one full of charm and mischief. One such piece, Cats Performing Ball Tricks, captures this playful spirit perfectly.
Inspired by the popular street performer Kikugawa Kunimaru, the artwork portrays clever cats re-enacting his famous acrobatic routines. From balancing on narrow posts while kicking a ball (Rangui-watari), to rolling it along their bodies (Yaezakura), the lively movements are rendered with delightful detail and humor.
In Japanese culture, the ball (temari) is more than just a toy. Its round shape symbolizes harmony and good fortune—wishes for a child’s healthy growth, a happy home, or smooth relationships. For this reason, temari motifs are often considered auspicious and were even included in bridal trousseaus.
