In Japan, it is a New Year’s tradition to display the animal of the year’s zodiac (eto). This custom originates from the ancient belief of welcoming Toshigami, the New Year deity who brings good fortune with the first sunrise, by displaying the zodiac animal that serves as the deity’s messenger.

This Tenugui depicts a sacred horse galloping through the sky toward the majestic Mt. Fuji — Japan’s highest and most revered peak.
Dyed in brilliant vermilion with delicate shades of black, it captures both power and grace.
Since ancient times, horses have been seen as divine messengers connecting gods and people. In Shinto shrines, they are worshipped as *Shinme* (sacred horses).
Mt. Fuji itself represents aspiration, perfection, and harmony. Its name (*Fuji*, a homonym for “immortality” in Japanese) is associated with longevity and good fortune.
The image of a divine horse soaring toward Mt. Fuji carries hopes for progress, success, and new beginnings.

Inspired by the woodblock print *Azabu-Juban Banba* by Tanaka Yumi, a court painter active from the Edo to the Meiji period, this design depicts the historic Azabu-Juban district, once home to horse grounds (*banba*).
During the Edo era, horses played an important role in daily life — in transport, agriculture, and ceremonial events. This Tenugui reflects the deep connection between people and horses, and the rich cultural heritage of the Azabu-Juban area.
