Tenugui “Moon Viewing”

Jugo-ya (August 15th of the lunar calendar) is the day of the year when the moon looks most beautiful. It is a Japanese custom to celebrate the year’s harvest by offering dumplings and Japanese pampas grass on this night and looking the beautiful moon.
There is a story of “Taishakuten and the Rabbit” that is told in Konjaku Monogatari (a collection of tales established in the 12th century). Taishakuten (the guardian deity of Buddhism) appeared in front of the rabbit disguised as an old man, and Taishakuten was so moved by the rabbit’s act of sacrificing his life that he sent the rabbit to the moon. From this, there is a theory that the rabbit is making rice cakes for the god Taishakuten on the moon.
The pattern on the moon’s surface looks like a rabbit making rice cakes, so the moon, rabbit, dumplings, and Japanese pampas grass are considered the symbol of “Otsukimi (moon viewing)”.
