江戸時代、手ぬぐいの被り方は職業や状況によって異なり、粋を競った。右上からまつり番付うり、唐茄子、えりまき、米や、みちゆき、飴うり、よこ、喧嘩、吹きながし、ちりよけ、わかしゅ、けんか、てっか、うしろ、吉原、ねじり、すっとこ、あねさん、小姓、向う、こもり、おき、道中、ほお、うさぎ、ごんた、はなうけ、仕事。

Art Tenugui "Wearing Tenugui"

In the Edo period, there were various ways to wear Tenugui as head covering depending on one’s occupation and the situation. Tenugui is made from cotton and has traditionally been used as a hand towel or head covering. Due to the variety of designs and their beauty, there are lots of other ways to use Tenugui, such as using them as a wall hanging, a wrapping cloth, or a scarf.
